The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Volunteer crews, including at Broughty Ferry RNLI Lifeboat Station, give up their time to go to those in need 24/7, 365 days a year, and aid in all manner of rescues. They cannot do their work without the support of fundraising volunteers and the generous support of the public. The money raised goes towards the maintenance of the lifeboats as well as lifesaving equipment, training and support for volunteers.

28 King Charles III Coronation Medals were awarded to members of Broughty Ferry’s RNLI volunteer crew at a ceremony outside the lifeboat station. This was a very high number and it illustrates the large and experienced crew that Broughty Ferry RNLI have.

The King Charles III Coronation Medal was announced on 5 May 2023, ahead of the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla. 400,000 medals were awarded to members of the Armed Forces and Emergency Services, as well as those taking part in Coronation events.

To be eligible, recipients had to have 5 years of service with their respective branch or service, or actively participated in supporting the Coronation. According the the gov.uk website, ‘the Medal acts as a thank you gift from the nation to commemorate the Coronation for the people who will make the historic service happen.’

Coxswain Pete Hay says, ‘It is particularly special that members of the RNLI have received this award and is a fitting recognition for their hard work and long service, at all times and in all conditions.’

In addition, many recipients of this award from the volunteer crew were also recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal. Awarded with a similar criteria to the Coronation Medal, this award also illustrates the hard work our crew have put in and is a fitting way to show gratitude to them.

The awarding of medals was particularly important as it helps to recognise the volunteer crew during a very busy period. Broughty Ferry are regularly the busiest Lifeboat Station in Scotland, with 127 launches in 2024 and 136 calls in 2023. Called at all hours of the day and in all weather, volunteer crew put in a spectacular effort and must be commended for having saved 7 lives in 2024 and 8 lives in 2022.
