Dover RNLI Volunteer Melita Buchan Qualifies as Competent ALB Crew
Dover RNLI Lifeboat Station is proud to announce that volunteer crew member Melita Buchan has successfully qualified as competent All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) crew, marking a significant milestone in her journey with the RNLI.
Melita originally joined the station in 2022 as a Family Liaison Officer, providing vital support to the families of crew members. Later that same year, she chose to expand her role and began training as a boat crew member. Since then, Melita has responded to numerous service calls and, following a rigorous training programme, has now officially passed out as fully qualified ALB crew.
“Melita’s dedication and commitment to our lifesaving mission have been clear from day one,” said Danny Wilkins, Station Coxswain. “Her progression from Family Liaison Officer to fully qualified crew member is an inspiration, and we’re incredibly proud to have her as part of the team.”
Becoming a competent ALB crew member is no small feat. On average, it takes two years and approximately £4,000 to train and equip each crew member to the high standards required for sea rescue operations. Dover RNLI is supported by a team of around 35 volunteer crew and 70 plus wider community volunteers, all of whom undergo extensive training to prepare for a wide range of maritime emergencies.
The support of the public plays a crucial role in enabling this work. Donations ensure the station can continue saving lives in the Channel and along the coasts of the UK and Ireland.
