Busy Week for Scarborough RNLI with multiple shouts and crew pass outs
Scarborough RNLI has had a particularly busy start to April, with three 'shouts' in quick succession, the first of which was on 3 April. A number of crew members also successfully completed their role competencies in what’s known as ‘crew pass outs’.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity dedicated to saving lives at sea. Its crews are made up of highly trained volunteers who often drop everything—day or night—to respond to emergencies. The work can be physically and emotionally demanding, requiring commitment, resilience and teamwork. This week has demonstrated that spirit in full, with Scarborough’s volunteer lifeboat crews answering multiple calls for help within just a few days.
The first call 'shout' happened on Thursday 3 April. Scarborough RNLI's inshore lifeboat (ILB) was tasked to assist in a multi-agency operation on North Bay.
On Sunday 6 April, the charity's all-weather lifeboat (ALB) was launched following a tasking request to assist a small fishing boat that had lost power close to Filey Brigg.
Scarborough RNLI's crew was paged at 10.20pm and able to establish radio contact with the vessel while also locating it on Radar.
Once on scene, the crew assessed the situation. It was decided that towing the boat back to Scarborough Harbour was the safest course of action. The ALB returned to harbour at 1.00am.
The third shout happened the following day (Monday 7 April). The ILB was paged at 5.36pm following reports of a person in the water in North Bay. Many of the crew responded immediately, leaving work or returning from home to launch. The lifeboat was stood down en route. It was confirmed the person was no longer in difficulty and was being attended to by Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
In addition to these calls, Scarborough RNLI is proud to announce several crew ‘pass outs’ this week. A crew pass out is a key milestone where volunteers demonstrate full competency in a specific role following extensive training and assessment. Recent successful pass outs include:
- Phil Martindale – ILB Head Launch
-
Toby Flood – Driver
-
Connor McPherson – Driver
-
Lee Perkins – Driver
Lee Marton, Coxswain for Scarborough RNLI Lifeboat, said: ‘It’s been a demanding but rewarding week for the team. The quick response to incidents shows the professionalism and dedication of our volunteer crew, while the pass outs highlight the continuous training we invest in to ensure we are ready to respond to emergencies at sea.’
