The first lifeboat service operated by volunteers in the town was
launched in 1826 and the fund-raising Lifeboat Week began in the
early 1970s.

The week is organised by the lifeboat crew with members of the
Lyme Regis and Charmouth Lifeboat Supporters. Chairman of the
supporters group Ken Lavery said: ‘We had a great week again, and
it’s all thanks to our volunteers and, of course our visitors, residents
and businesses who support our life-saving charity in so many ways.
‘Their generosity is greatly appreciated and this year donations
during the week are an estimated £15,000 which is a superb result.’

Among the major successes were the two displays by vintage
aircraft from the Navy Wings historic collection based at RNAS
Yeovilton, the water or wine lucky dip, the produce stall, crab fishing
competition and book sales.

A new event, the damsel in distress race, was also voted a triumph
with winners Elliot Shimmin and Jessie Sullivan returning their £100
prize from sponsor Mark Oldfield of the Harbour Inn as a donation to
the RNLI.

Next year’s Lifeboat Week is a week later than usual and will include
two Saturdays from August 15 th to August 23 rd .
