Bude RNLI launch to casualty cut off by the tide
On Sunday 10 August, Bude’s Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was tasked by HM Coastguard Falmouth to assist a casualty at Tintagel. The individual had be-come trapped in a cave by a fast-rising tide.
With a strong volunteer crew turnout, despite heavy traffic through Bude, the Inshore lifeboat was quickly launched and made best speed south towards Tintagel. Fortunately, the casualty was able to self-recover to safety, where they were met and assessed by the Boscastle Coastguard team. With the situation resolved, the Bude ILB returned to station.
If you’re heading out to explore our beautiful coastline, please keep these safety tips in mind:
- Always check tide times before setting off
- Carry a means of calling for help
- Let someone know your plans and expected return time
- Speak to local lifeguards for up-to-date safety information
Support at Summerleaze Beach
On their return, the ILB crew observed large numbers of swimmers and water users at Summerleaze Beach. They offered their assistance to the RNLI lifeguard team, which was gratefully accepted.
The ILB carried out shepherding techniques to help guide bathers into the flagged safe-swim zones, while shore crew supported from the beach—directing swimmers and keeping watch for anyone in difficulty.
Bude’s coastline is currently experiencing some of the strongest rip currents we’ve seen in recent years. RNLI lifeguards are posted at seven beaches in and around Bude.
Please follow their guidance at all times.
