Cleethorpes RNLI move into new Lifeboat Station

Lifeboats News Release

Volunteers from Cleethorpes RNLI moved into their newly-constructed lifeboat station on Friday 8 August and put it to immediate use with record-breaking shop takings and three callouts in the first weekend.

Shop volunteers completed the stocking of the new on-site shop on Friday lunchtime, planning to open the following day but decided, as they had finished ahead of schedule and there were so many people in the resort, to open there and then. The new location, with a view into the boat hall, was an immediate hit, and over £4,000 worth of goods were purchased in the first weekend.

Later on the same day, the operational volunteers moved their D Class lifeboat over from the old station along with essential operational equipment and began operating from the new location as well.

Their new operating procedures were put to use within days as the lifeboat was tasked three times on Sunday 10 August. Firstly, at 0730 to a broken-down motor cruiser in a busy anchorage with three people on board. The lifeboat took them under tow to the nearest safe port but had to leave them in a safe place when a Mayday call was received and both Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe lifeboats were tasked to a small vessel near Humberston which had capsized leaving two people in the water.

When they had been taken to safety the lifeboat continued the tow of the original vessel.

Later that evening, there was a third callout to a yacht near Humberston with two people on board which was unable to safely reach its moorings due to the weather conditions. The lifeboat assisted them safely back to where they needed to be. Mablethorpe RNLI also attended that incident.

Next weekend, a series of private events will be held as the representatives of the legacy donors of the station and the donors of the two lifeboats housed there formally hand over their gifts to the RNLI.

On Saturday 30 August, as part of Cleethorpes 999 Day, organised by Humberside Police, the station’s volunteers will open their doors to the public with the opportunity to visit the boat hall and take guided tours of the rest of the facility.

In the meantime the shop will be open every day from 10:00 to 16:00 with the opportunity to view both boats from the viewing area.
