Fowey RNLI volunteers rescue two boats in two days
Fowey lifeboat had to tow a 47' yacht and a non-commercial fishing boat into Fowey Harbour, after both reported engine failure.
On Wednesday 20 August, during a busy sailing regatta week in Fowey, Falmouth coastguard requested that Fowey lifeboat be launched to assist a 47' yacht which was stuck a mile out of Fowey Harbour with a broken engine and no wind.
Some of the crew had already been out on the water earlier, taking part in the regatta, so they were aware of the lack of wind. The crew launched their Atlantic 85 and headed off to assess the situation. On reaching the yacht they set up a tow and towed it safely into the harbour where it was handed over to Fowey Harbour Patrol to complete the mooring.
On Thursday 21 August the coastguard requested Fowey launch their lifeboat to assist a 33’ non-commercial fishing boat with engine failure 13 miles offshore, with four people onboard.
Fowey crew launched their Atlantic 85 lifeboat and on arrival at the location assessed the situation. They decided to take the boat in tow and return her to her mooring in Fowey Harbour. On arrival in the harbour the casualty vessel was handed over to harbour patrol and put on its mooring.
Fowey Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Ogg said: 'It is important to ensure that boat engines are well maintained and regularly checked. Always carry enough fuel for your journey and adequate tools and spares. Also make sure that you have a means of calling for help onboard, such as a fully charged mobile and VHF. If you do get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.'
