RNLI Atlantic 85 lifeboat Howard Bell arrived on scene four minutes later and its volunteer crew managed to pull one casualty from the water into the lifeboat very quickly. The remaining casualty was seen to go under the water, and a crew member was instructed to enter the sea pulling the casualty back to the surface and then with the assistance of other crew members, haul the casualty on board the lifeboat. Other potential casualties had managed to make it back to the shore.

The lifeboat returned to Redcar RNLI boathouse where an ambulance from the North East Ambulance Service was waiting to give medical assistance.

Ben Cutter, Helm for the rescue said: ‘The rip current was very strong and made it difficult for swimmers to make it back to the shore. We arrived on scene and proceeded to get both casualties onto the lifeboat as quickly as we could. If you are caught in a rip current stay calm and don’t panic Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of the rip or lay back in the water, extend your arms and legs and float.’
