Rob Buchan joined RNLI Dover in 2022 and has steadily progressed through the ranks—from crew member to qualified mechanic. Now, with his recent pass-out as an ALB navigator, he joins a small team of trained volunteers responsible for one of the most critical roles aboard the lifeboat.

The navigator’s role is vital for ensuring the lifeboat reaches incidents quickly and safely, accurately locating casualties and coordinating the vessel’s approach to allow the deck crew to perform safe recoveries and render assistance.

“Rob’s dedication, skill, and commitment to learning have made him an integral part of the team,” said Danny Wilkins, Station Coxswain at RNLI Dover. “His advancement into the navigator role means we’re even better equipped to respond swiftly and safely to emergencies in the Channel.”

Rob will continue to support the station both as a navigator and as a qualified mechanic, showcasing the versatility and dedication required of RNLI volunteers.
