The International Island Games were held in Orkney, in July of this year (2025), it was their 40th anniversary. The week has just closed. We enjoyed bright, warm (even hot) sunshine, every day, from dawn until dusk. Around 2,000 athletes came from 23 other islands around the world to have competition in 12 sports. 1,200 medals were awarded.

The organisers asked for nominations from Orcadians, of people they believed had made significant contributions to Orkney. They were known as Community Champions and came from all walks of life. They were drawn from charity fund-raisers; leaders of sports clubs; founders of community groups – and lifeboat crew members.

Five RNLI volunteers from Stromness Lifeboat crew were chosen to present medals. John Davidson – the full-time mechanic – presented medals to the triathlon winners on the first day of competition. Norman Brass, James Burgon and his son, Lewis, plus Karen Boswarva, all presented medal to swimmers in an exciting night at the pool. By pure coincidence Lewis was able to place the gold medal for 50m women’s butterfly around the neck of fellow Orcadian Eve Wood.

The games’ community champion initiative was a great way to recognise those who give so much to Orkney. It was lovely to see our very own crew, looking smart in RNLI shirts and ties, recognising the athletes and being honoured themselves.
