Child-safe wristbands now available on Brighton beach
If you’re planning to enjoy some time with your family on Brighton beach this weekend, you can collect a free child-safe wristband from one of the RNLI lifeguard units on the beach, from Brighton Pier or from some local shops and vendors who are based nearby.
You can write your mobile number on the band and then if your child becomes separated from you on the busy beach, it should be much easier to reunite you with them.
Every year lifeguards and police are contacted by distressed parents when they’ve lost sight of their children by the sea, so Brighton RNLI’s Water Safety Team, working with Sussex Police cadets, are making sure that these wristbands from HM Coastguard are widely available so children can stay safer while enjoying the seaside.
With a scorching weekend ahead, please do collect one of these when you reach the beach if you have younger children with you. It can also be useful to take a photo of them that morning on your phone so that anyone searching for them has a correct and up-to-date description of them and their clothing.
Vicki Linton-Crook, Water Safety Advisor for Brighton RNLI, said, ‘On a sunny weekend, there is no better place to spend the day than by the seaside! We want everyone to have a fantastic weekend and get home safely afterwards, so please pick up one of these wristbands for your child, keep a very close eye on them if they’re near or in the water and make sure that any inflatables are tethered or that you have a tight hold on them as they can be blown out to sea very quickly.
Our lifeguards are on the beach to offer safety advice and first aid too, and if you top up the sunscreen, drink plenty of water and enjoy the sea safely, you should have a great day to remember.’
