Be a lifesaver this summer – join Hoylake RNLI for a Mayday Car Wash

The Mayday Car Wash will help fund lifesaving training, kit and equipment for Hoylake RNLI’s volunteers

The lifesavers of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) are used to answering ‘maydays’ – they are the most serious distress call. But this May, RNLI lifeboat crews and lifeguards need your help.

Hoylake RNLI’s volunteers are gearing up for their annual Mayday Car Wash, getting ready to scrub, rinse and polish cars for a suggested donation of £10 per vehicle.

From 10am to 12.30pm, the crew will aim to exceed the total of £1,500 raised at last year's event. Funds raised through the RNLI’s Mayday campaign will ensure that the charity’s lifesavers have everything they need to keep visitors to the coast safe this summer.

Howie Owen, Hoylake RNLI Coxswain, said: ‘Summer is our busiest time of year, when thousands of people head to the coast to enjoy days out with family or friends. Many will not be aware of the risks and will get into danger on or around the water.’

‘Mayday is our own call for help, as the RNLI relies on the generosity of the public to help us be there when we’re needed most. We’re looking forward welcoming our community to this year's fundraising car wash. Our crew clean our lifeboat, hovercraft and tractors thoroughly after every launch, so visitors can be sure their cars will leave looking ship-shape!’

The RNLI’s Mayday national fundraiser begins on Thursday 1 May and will run for the whole month across the UK and Ireland.

If you’re not able to attend Hoylake RNLI’s Mayday Car Wash on Sunday 11 May, you can get involved by taking part in the Mayday Mile. Participants can complete a mile – or more than one! - wherever and however they like, whether they walk, jog, hop or skip!
