Sunday Shout for Largs RNLI
HM Coastguard requested the launch of Largs lifeboat to assist a broken down cabin cruiser drifting near Wemyss Bay ferry terminal.
Shortly before 10pm on Sunday 4 May 2025 the volunteer crew at Largs lifeboat once again launched into the night to assist the casualty vessel which was near to the pier for the ferry and drifting into the shipping channel.
The volunteers made best speed to the given location, where they were able to quickly locate the vessel. With some difficulty they were able to get the engine started.
Due to the unreliability of the engine the decision was taken by the helm of the lifeboat to escort the casualty vessel to Rothesay.
On arrival they were met by the local Coastguard Rescue Team.
Largs lifeboat was then stood down by HM Coastguard, refuelled and made ready for service.
Deryk Stronach, volunteer launch authority at Largs lifeboat station, said; ‘It’s important your boat and engine are thoroughly inspected and maintained after the winter season.
‘Before taking to the water please make sure all your equipment, especially lifejackets, are in good condition and working correctly.
'Always check the weather conditions and the tide before your trip. Have a suitable anchor on board that can hold your boat and make sure it’s ready to be deployed when you need it.
‘If you get into difficulty, or see someone at risk or in trouble at the coast or in the sea, you should always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
