Event: 'Walk to the Wall' to help save lives at sea
The Lytham St Annes RNLI Lifeboat Station is holding a guided walk out across the sands to, and then along, the historic Training Wall which lines the main channel of the Ribble - to help raise funds for the charity's lifesaving work.
The 4.7 mile walk will give great views over the coastline and replaces the annual 'Leg It for Lytham Lifeboats' walk between the station’s two boathouses.
The stone training walls were built in the 19th and 20th century to concentrate the river’s flow into the shipping channel and remain much as they were when the Port of Preston was open for commercial shipping. The walk sets off from the All-weather Lifeboat House on 121 – 123 South Promenade (FY8 1SJ) at 4pm on Sunday 25 May and returns there where refreshments will be available.
The proceedings will be in charge of experienced sand walk guides and lifeboat crew members will be on hand to explain the local history of the river and the features on view. The station’s inshore lifeboat (ILB) will be patrolling the channel to add extra interest and the all-weather lifeboat (ALB) will be on view at her boathouse.
The fun local walk for families, friends and well behaved dogs costs £5 per adult and £2 for under 16s and the money raised goes to help saving lives at sea. Further details may be obtained from James Stannard by email - please contact: James_Stannard @rnli.org.uk
