Aldeburgh RNLI Atlantic 85, Ralph, launched to a houseboat taking on water

At approximately 8.25pm on Friday 23 May, the volunteer crew at RNLI Aldeburgh were paged by the coastguard to a boat taking on water about a mile off the coast, near Orford Castle

Aldeburgh's Atlantic 85, Ralph, was launched at 8.40pm and reached the stricken houseboat at 8.55pm. Conditions were good with clear visibility. The Aldeburgh Lifeboat crew set up a tow for stability and boarded the houseboat to asses the situation.

RNLI Harwich Lifeboat Station were also paged and their all-weather lifeboat arrived on scene at 9.25pm.

Both crews attempted to drain the water, but without success. The Harwich crew took over the tow and the Aldeburgh Lifeboat crew were stood down at 11.10pm.

Aldeburgh's lifeboat returned to station, Ralph was washed down, refuelled and back on service at 12.15am.

Aldeburgh lifeboat station has been operating since 1826 and has been part of the RNLI since 1852. Since formation, their lifeboats have launched 1,267 times and saved 693 lives.

Aldeburgh lifeboat station has two boats on service: B-class Atlantic 85, Ralph, and D class inshore lifeboat, Susan Scott.
