Night call out for Porthdinllaen RNLI volunteers to yacht in difficulty
The all-weather Tamar class lifeboat, ‘John D Spicer’, was launched last night (Thursday 22 May) after a yacht lost propulsion off the coast off Porth Colmon near Llangwnnadl.
The volunteer crew were paged at 9.53pm after the people on the yacht had contacted HM Coastguard that they were in difficulties off the coast with a fouled propeller.
The crew quickly assembled and launched the all-weather lifeboat which made the journey down the Pen Llyn coastline at the best possible speed to the yacht in calm conditions.
Once on scene, Coxswain Owain Williams assessed the situation and due the loss to navigation, and the increased risk of no daylight, it was
decided that a tow was the best and safest option. A tow was established and the vessel, with two persons and a dog on board, was brought safely back to Porthdinllaen Harbour and placed on a mooring for repairs to be carried out.
The lifeboat was cleaned, refuelled and ready for service by 2:00am.
'Our crew are always prepared to respond to their pagers at a moment's notice. They train regularly for all eventualities. A yacht without propulsion could have ended up in a more serious predicament had we not arrived and taken action. As with the crew on this yatch, it is always advisable to contact the Coastguard if you run into difficulty on the water.'
