Aldeburgh RNLI Atlantic 85, Ralph, launched to aid yacht aground in river mouth

At 7.30pm on Monday 26 May, Aldeburgh lifeboat station was tasked by the coastguard to a lone sailor on a 20ft yacht who had run aground in the mouth of the river Alde.

The crew were paged at 7.35pm and the Atlantic 85, Ralph, was launched at 7.50pm. Conditions were good with clear visibility and the lifeboat reached the yacht at 8pm
The lifeboat volunteers stood by the yacht for safety until the tide had risen sufficiently for the boat to refloat. They then escorted the yacht to Orford Quay, the nearest place of safety.
The Aldeburgh Atlantic 85 lifeboat arrived in Orford at 9.45pm, and escorted the sailor to shore where they were met by the Coastguard team. The Aldeburgh Atlantic 85,
Ralph, returned to station, was washed down, refuelled and back on service by 12.05am.

Aldeburgh lifeboat station has been operating since 1826 and has been part of the RNLI since 1852. Since formation, their lifeboats have launched 1,267 times and saved 693 lives.
Aldeburgh lifeboat station has two boats on service: B-class Atlantic 85, Ralph, and D class inshore lifeboat, Susan Scott.
