The 18ft ‘Shetland’ type cabin pleasure craft with two persons on board, in a reported position of approximately 3/4 a mile North of Nefyn Point, had experienced mechanical failure on their outboard engine and were drifting out to sea. The occupants had deployed their anchor, but due to the prevailing wind, the anchor was unable to hold the craft in its position.

The lifeboat, with assistant Coxswain Adam Daniel at the helm, made the best possible speed towards the casualty vessel and was alongside the craft within 10 minutes of launching.

After assessing the situation, the coxswain decided that the best option was for the two casualties, who were no worse of their ordeal, to remain aboard their craft and a tow line was successfully transferred to them.

As soon as the tow line was secured the lifeboat proceeded to tow the craft at a suitable speed towards Morfa Nefyn Beach. While under tow, the casualty vessel managed to restart their engine and the tow line was removed. The lifeboat escorted the craft the remainder of the way, where they were transferred to the care of the local Porthdinllaen Coastguard Rescue Team at Morfa Nefyn Beach.

The lifeboat returned to its station where it was washed down and ready for service by 8.30 pm.

Dylan Thomas, Porthdinllaen Lifeboat Press Officer said:

‘The casualty was right to call for assistance as soon as they found themselves in difficulty. With deteriorating weather conditions a situation can change in minutes.

'This was also the first call out for assistant Coxswain Adam Daniel, who passed out as a Tamar Coxswain at the beginning of the year. He carried out his role in a professional manner, our crews and coxswains train on a weekly basis for all eventualities to the high standards of the RNLI.

'As always, thanks to our Colleagues at Porthdinllaen Coastguard Rescue Team for their assistance tonight.'
