RNLI West Kirby launch to assist kayakers in distress near Hilbre Island
The volunteer crew from West Kirby lifeboat were tasked following reports of three kayakers in need of assistance.
West Kirby’s D class lifeboat, Leonard Pownall, was tasked at 4.20pm on Monday 26 May, by HM Coastguard following reports of three kayakers in difficulty near the west side of Hilbre Island and Hoyle Bank.
The alarm was raised by lifeguards after observing two kayaks, one carrying a solo kayaker and one with two people, struggling in the area. The lifeboat crew launched promptly and made their way to the kayakers location.
Conditions at the time included strong winds and an ebbing tide, which made it difficult for the kayakers to make headway and return safely to shore.
One kayaker had managed to reach Hilbre Island independently, where they received a welfare check. The remaining two kayakers, sharing a single kayak, were located by the lifeboat crew on Hoyle Bank. Following an assessment to ensure their wellbeing, the lifeboat crew safely escorted them back to Hilbre Island.
Andy Brown, West Kirby RNLI Launch Authority, said:
‘Conditions can quickly change around the Dee Estuary, especially for small watercraft like kayaks.
‘Thanks to the quick actions of the lifeguards and a prompt launch by the crew, all three individuals were located and brought to safety. It was a good outcome all round.
‘If you see someone in difficulty near the coast, always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. We’re always here to help.’
Following the shout, the volunteers cleaned, refuelled, and made the lifeboat ready for service.
