Invergordon Lifeboat Launches to Assist Trawler off Tarbat Ness

Lifeboats News Release

At 04:27 Sunday 14 September, the volunteer crew of Invergordon RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat were paged by HM Coastguard to assist the East Sutherland Rescue Association with a 33ft trawler carrying two persons onboard, located approximately five nautical miles northwest of Tarbat Ness Lighthouse.

The trawler had suffered mechanical difficulties and was unable to make progress. Invergordon’s Shannon class Lifeboat ‘Agnes AP Barr’ launched promptly with a crew of six and made best speed to the scene, arriving at 05:47.
On arrival, the lifeboat crew confirmed both persons onboard were safe and well but that the vessel had experienced complete engine failure.

After an assessment, it was decided that establishing a tow was the safest course of action given the circumstances and location. The trawler was successfully taken under tow and brought back to Invergordon’s West Harbour, where it was secured alongside to enable repairs.

The Duty Launch Authority David Roberts praised the swift response of the crew:
“This morning’s launch once again highlights the dedication and professionalism of our volunteer team, ready to respond 24/7. We are pleased the situation was resolved safely and that the crew of the trawler are now back in harbour.”

The RNLI reminds all mariners of the importance of ensuring vessels are well-maintained and properly equipped before heading to sea, and of carrying appropriate safety and communication equipment at all times.
