Happisburgh RNLI Water Safety Team moved inland this summer
This summer, the Water Safety Team have been working with the Broads Authority, Norfolk Fire Service and the Police Broads beat.
The team have been to 9 locations on The Broads: Reedham, How Hill, St Benets, Somerleyton, Bramerton, Salhouse Broad, Beccles Yacht Station, Yarmouth Yacht Station and the Dutch Tea Gardens at Lowestoft. They have spoken to over 300 people.
These fun and educational events aim to ensure that everyone enjoying the Broads – whether on a paddleboard, cruiser, canoe, or kayak – has the knowledge and confidence to stay safe on and around the water.
A key part of the campaign is reminding boaters and visitors of the Float to Live message and the importance of wearing lifejackets, understanding local navigation rules, and knowing how to get help in an emergency.
Daniel Buck, Broads Authority Ranger for the River Yare and Wensum, said: ‘Every year, we welcome thousands to enjoy the beauty of the Broads, but it only takes a moment to turn a peaceful day into an emergency. Boat safety isn’t just about rules - it’s about respect: for the water, for wildlife, and for each other. Wear your lifejacket, know your speed, and stay alert. The Broads is for everyone, and it’s our shared responsibility to keep everyone safe.’
Philip Smith from RNLI Water Safety at Happisburgh Lifeboat Station added: ‘If you ever find yourself in trouble in the water, try to stay calm and float — it really can save your life. And don’t forget, if you need help, call 999 and ask for the coastguard. We're here to help you come home safe. Our four main messages are Stay Afloat, Stay in Touch, Stay Put and Stay Alert.’ These can be found on RNLI.org/StayAfloat.
