A short exercise that teaches upper secondary students the value of floating to live.
The average temperature of British and Irish coastal waters is 12-15ºC, cold enough to cause cold water shock.
Falling into cold water unexpectedly causes the instinct to fight against it by swimming hard. But when people fight it, the chances are, they’ll drown. The key is to fight their instinct, not the water. Instead, they should float for a short while, until they regain control of their breathing.
