Beaumaris Lifeboat tasked to a mystery light spotted on the Menai Strait.
At 10.30 pm on Friday 23 May 2025 the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a page from H.M. Coastguard relating to a report they had received from a member of the public regarding a flashing light seen in the water.
The Beaumaris Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington with her volunteer crew launched and proceeded to the area as the Penmon Mobile Coastguard Team who had arrived on the shoreline could not fully identify the source of the light.
The lifeboat crew discovered the light to be from a beacon that the crew of a yacht had attached on the anchor cable to mark its position. Once the lifeboat volunteers had confirmed with the occupants aboard the vessel that all was well The Coastguard released the lifeboat to return to her station.
The lifeboat returned to Beaumaris at 11.00 pm to be refuelled and cleaned. Once this had been completed the crew left the station; pending the next call out which came at 2.57 am on Saturday 25 May 2025.
A RNLI spokesman said: ‘Member of the public did the correct thing in altering the coastguard, as it is better for any unusual sighting to be investigated, fortunately in this instance it was a false alarm with good intent.’
