Launch a Memory

Celebrate the life of someone you love by adding their name to Swanage RNLI's lifeboat

What is Launch a Memory?

Remember a loved one you miss – or celebrate someone still with us – by adding their name to a very special all-weather lifeboat: Swanage RNLI's Shannon.

There is a suggested donation of £75/€75 per name, which will be used to help save lives at sea wherever the need is greatest. Your kind donation will go towards our mission to save every one.

How Launch a Memory works

  1. 1

    Add a name

Honour someone special by adding their name to the lifeboat. You can add up to 10 names using our easy online form. The suggested donation is £75/€75 per name.
  2. 2

    Receive confirmation and your certificate/s

Within 2-3 working days of completing the form, we’ll email you a personalised certificate for each name you’ve added.
  3. 3

    Get email updates

We'll send you an update email around every 2 months over the next year with the latest news about the lifeboat.

These will include information about our online name finder, our bespoke retail range, the Poole event weekend and more.

You can also check the lifeboat's dedicated web page for updates.

  4. 4

    Final check of names

Once we've reached the maximum amount of names or the time limit, we'll close the campaign and no more names will be accepted.

We will do a final check of the names to ensure they meet our guidelines. If not, we'll contact you with any amends.

  5. 5

    Decals are created

The decals holding all of the beloved names will be created by our in-house team, ready to be added on to the lifeboat in 2026.

The names will stay on the lifeboat for the lifespan of the decals/lifeboat.

  6. 6

    Poole event weekend

This event will give supporters an opportunity to see the Swanage lifeboat up close at the All-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole, Dorset.

You'll be given an opportunity to buy tickets for this event in advance. Although tickets will be limited, we are hopeful that once your Launch a Memory lifeboat is back on service at Swanage, there will be more opportunities to book a visit to see it in the near future.
Note: All timings are dependent on operational constraints and are subject to change.

A personalised gift certificate

You’ll automatically receive a personalised, digital gift certificate in memory of each name you add, for you to download and print, and perhaps wrap for someone special. The certificate/s will be in your email inbox within 48 hours of submitting the name/s of your loved one/s.

Celebration certificates

If you have gifted a Launch a Memory dedication for a loved one who is still with us, to celebrate their birthday, their anniversary or another special occasion, please email [email protected] after making your submission to receive a celebration certificate.

We'll share opportunities to see the lifeboat up close

Once you've made your donation and submitted your chosen name/s, we'll keep you informed about opportunities to see the name/s of your loved one/s displayed on the lifeboat. This may be in Poole and/or Swanage (TBC). Tickets will be limited and not guaranteed for every supporter. We kindly ask that you don't contact the station about Launch a Memory or arrive hoping to see the lifeboat. Please contact [email protected] with any queries.

Although Launch a Memory is aimed at those with a loved one who is no longer with us, we have lots of supporters who add the name of someone who is still with us. We have had supporters add someone's name for a birthday present, an anniversary and even a wedding gift!

You are welcome to add:

  • Your name.
  • The name of a living family member or friend whom you hold dearly.
  • The names of a couple for an anniversary or wedding gift. Please add as two separate names (you will receive two separate certificates).
  • The name of a beloved pet.

Celebration certificates

If you are donating to celebrate a living loved one, once you have submitted your name(s), you'll be given the opportunity to request a celebratory certificate through our Launch a Memory inbox. Please email [email protected] with your request.

While we do try our best to keep names submitted together - we can never guarantee this. To produce the decal with thousands of names, we input all names into a software to help arrange these in the shape of the letters and numbers. There are manual requirements as part of this to move the names around into suitable positions, to ensure there are no empty gaps or spacing. If we have too much spacing or gaps in the letters and numbers, there is a risk the lifeboats identification details won't appear suitably on the lifeboat.

We hope you can understand why it’s difficult to accommodate all requests / submissions to keep names together. We appreciate your understanding if names appear separately.

We have a suggested donation to add a name of £75/€75. This has been based on careful consideration of the resources and costs required, including looking at the average donation amount received during previous campaigns, and surveying previous Launch a Memory donors.

The costs of running our lifesaving service are rising. Essentials like fuel, energy and kit are becoming significantly more expensive – meaning every pound or euro donated now buys less than it did before. This increase will help to cover the growing costs of funding our lifesaving service.

We understand that everyone is experiencing increases in the cost of living and we are immensely grateful to our supporters, who already do so much for the RNLI and who have continued to support the RNLI through challenging times. Without their support, our lifesavers could not rescue the thousands of people who need our help each year. It's important to note that the suggested donation amount is not mandatory or binding. You have the freedom to contribute any amount you feel comfortable with and can afford.
